Frequently asked questions about reverse vending machines and Deposit return system
The UK Deposit Return Scheme is planned to start on 1 October 2027. From that date, a refundable deposit will be charged on eligible single-use drink containers at the point of purchase and refunded when the empty container is returned to an approved return point.
The scheme will cover eligible single-use PET plastic bottles, steel cans and aluminium cans between 150 ml and 3 litres.
Glass containers are not included in the scheme for England, Northern Ireland and Scotland.
A small deposit is added to the price of drinks sold in eligible containers. Consumers can reclaim it by returning the empty container to an approved return point, such as a reverse vending machine at a supermarket, convenience store or other designated location. The refund can be received as a receipt voucher redeemable in store, a digital credit or, in some cases, cash. Approved return points will be required to accept eligible containers from any brand, not just the products they sell.
